My family and I have loved Deadwicks for years, and we typically make a special trip to Portsmouth just to stop here any time we're on vacation. In the last few years, it's seemed like they've drifted in the direction of pushy sales tactics that negatively impact the experience and make it feel less authentic. This most recent visit was downright uncomfortable - there were more employees than customers in the (tiny) store, and they relentlessly followed us around making awkward conversation in a way that seemed like they were worried we would shoplift. It made it impossible to simply enjoy the store. I looked at the reviews to see if anyone has had a similar experience lately, and was surprised at the number of other customers who've expressed feeling the exact same way. Hopefully Deadwicks hears the constructive feedback here so it can be a more enjoyable experience like it has been in the past.
I’ve shopped at Deadwick’s for a decade and the last few visits have left me more and more dissatisfied. I have always left the store feeling what I bought was worth the price I paid but my last visit I was stunned by the bill. I wasn’t offered any kind of receipt so I couldn’t understand what was so expensive. I miss the store I grew to love, it feels like shopping under a microscope since my family was followed throughout a store the size of two shoe boxes.
The previous review was pretty spot on. My partner and I did not feel comfortable browsing here. It seemed like we were being watched the entire time. The two employees were oddly attentive and even eyeballed each other when we weren’t in their line of sight. It gave us the impression that we were being racially profiled which made the experience very unsettling. People should be aware of this before visiting.
